“Something’s wrong,” Scarlett said.

I pulled myself out the pod. “You don’t say.”

Flashbacks somersaulted through my head like daydreams, the other world not left behind enough, still visceral.

“I don’t need sarcasm,” Scarlett said. “Tell me what you saw.”

And so, I proceeded to tell Scarlett the story as we walked to the brisk sunshine outside. The pleasant suburb with its single wood-paneled houses was a typically unusual setting for unpleasant incidents.

“I’d prefer your experience to mine.” She shivered. “I thought Belle killed Steve, but virtual Belle destroyed my certainty.”

“It seems virtual Belle made herself the prime suspect.”

“The dog you saw was Romeo?” Scarlett glanced down the path of suburban streets, hoping for a sight of dog fur, but there was nothing to be seen besides swaying trees, freshly mowed grass, and the occasional flower bed.

“Belle having her dog in VR makes sense,” I said.

“The real Belle, not the virtual version.”

“You’re saying it was the real dog?”

“It’s not a dog.” Scarlett bit down on her lower lip. “With all of the powers Belle had there, it’s hard to imagine why she left the crime scene intact for Amar.”

“You think she altered the scene?”

“She didn’t hide anything—she exaggerated. Where she put me…” Scarlett seemed more shaken than I’d seen her before. “Let’s say it was less pleasant than your forest. The crime scene was real, but she left it intact for a reason. She either wants the attention or the blame. If she’s punished, maybe she thinks she’ll survive. Or maybe she’s hoping the punishment is an end to her existence. We’re missing something, which we won’t know until we find this ‘dog’.”

“Another search.”

“To find a myth, we might need a myth.”

“No more cats?” I asked.

“Not this time.”

My godly contrast was coming down the street.

“Amar,” I whispered.

“I know,” Scarlett said.

The god arrived in a different guise than the one that took Belle away, despite the same black cloak. He was in the form I’d met him at the restaurant; tall, strong, stern. But by pure eyes alone, I could’ve spotted him miles away as a beacon of youth.

My essence strung tight as piano wire, ready to sing, scream, or break. I was ready for the inevitable fight between natural enemies, such as a honey badger and bees, or a honey badger and snakes, or a honey badger and other honey badgers.

I should’ve turned into a honey badger and mauled Amar.

“Scarlett,” Amar said with a smile, shaking her hand.

“What do you want?” I asked, skipping such pleasantries. A few thousand years of knowing and hating each other does that.

“And I was supposed to be the direct one.” Amar’s grin spread like a rubber band before snapping back stern.

“You’re less bubbly than I remember.”

“I’ve aged.” There was a black crack in an iris.

“You’re welcome,” I said. “Time wears thin, like my patience.”

“Patience is all you have,” Amar said. “If I wanted you dead, you would be.”

“And yet, I’m still kicking. Do you enjoy it when I kick you?”

“No.”

“Missing out.” I winked.

“I don’t need your humor or your help on this case.
